Colon & Rectal Surgery

Colon and rectal surgery focuses on diagnosing and treating conditions affecting the colon, rectum and anus.  There are several procedures ranging from endoscopies, excisions to colon resections.  These can be used to treat benign (non-cancerous) and malignant (cancerous) conditions.

Preventive Colonoscopy

It is recommended that people at average risk begin have routine colonoscopies at 45.  At that time your physician will determine when your next colonoscopy should be.

If you are at a higher risk due to family history or genetic testing you should speak with your primary physician to determine a plan.

Colon Surgery

Most colon surgeries aim at removing the affected piece of colon whether it is a colon cancer, diverticulitis, bowel-obstruction, inflammatory bowel disease or bleeding.  The affected portion is removed and then the remaining segments are reconnected.  In some instances reconnection is not possible and a colostomy is performed.
