Gallbladder Surgery

Gallbladder Disease is the inflammation, infection, stones or obstruction of the gallbladder.  The gallbladder is located in the right upper quadrant of the abdomen underneath the liver.  Common symptoms include abdominal pain, upper back pain, nausea and vomiting after eating.

Diagnosis

Ultrasound is most commonly used to diagnose gallbladder disease with the ability to identify stones or inflammation.  HIDA scan is another option that can evaluate gallbladder function.  CT scans can also be used but are a limited option.

Treatment

Dietary changes may help patients with mild or infrequent symptoms.  Surgical removal of the gallbladder is the treatment of choice when symptoms worsen or become more frequent.

Surgery

Laparoscopic Cholecystectomy is a minimally invasive procedure that requires a few small incisions in which the diseased gallbladder is removed.  In the event of major infection or other complications an open cholecystectomy is performed utilizing a larger incision.  General Anesthesia is required.
